Edwin Kiptoo Chiloba: Justice at last

The conviction of Jacktone Odhiambo for the murder of Edwin Chiloba brings a mix of relief and sorrow to the African queer community. We’re grateful for this ruling, but it can’t erase the pain of losing someone as bright and passionate as Edwin. His tragic death in January 2023 shook everyone to the core and served as a painful reminder of the dangers LGBTQ+ individuals face every day in Africa and the Global South.

The judge’s decision, backed by solid evidence, shows that justice is possible, even when the system feels stacked against the marginalized. This ruling reflects the tireless efforts of activists who have worked hard to keep Edwin’s story alive and demand accountability.

Ivy Werimba from galck+, a queer organization based in Kenya, described this ruling as “long-awaited justice,” and it truly is. It reminds us that we deserve to be seen, heard, and valued. But while we take a moment to celebrate, we can’t forget the countless others who are still fighting for justice and safety, often in silence.

This ruling is a step forward, but it’s just one part of a much larger struggle. We hope this ruling will spark real and meaningful change. We hope to honor Edwin’s legacy by standing united and fighting for justice and equality for all. In solidarity both with the Kenyan queer community as well as those in the Global South.
