The Vatican Pilgrimage and hope for LGBTQ+ people

The acceptance of LGBTQ+ people in religious communities is a journey filled with ups and downs, but recent events give us hope. The Vatican’s upcoming pilgrimage for LGBTQ+ Christians and their allies in 2025 is an important step forward. It shows that the Catholic Church can be a welcoming place for everyone.

I have often felt that Pope Francis has been a positive influence on the Catholic Church. He has often reminded us that God loves all people, no matter who they love. His message encourages us to imagine a Catholic Church that embraces everyone, including LGBTQ+ individuals.

For us, as queer Ethiopians, this pilgrimage feels special. It’s a sign that we can be proud of who we are. Even if we are not able to openly talk about LGBTQ+ issues, we can reconcile our faith  with our sexuality which is important for those who often feel isolated. The idea that love can overcome hate is powerful for us, reminding us that we deserve to be accepted and valued as we are.

This pilgrimage can inspire hope and strength, helping us feel embraced in our faith. And making me believe that we, as Ethiopian queers, might find freedom and acceptance in our churches one day.
