My heart aches as I watch video after video of people making fun of him. They mock him for allegedly loving men or wearing a dress, thinking they’re being clever with their hurtful comments. Some even go so far as to call for him to be jailed or worse, just for daring to “insult” our traditions, culture, and religion by being himself.

I don’t know if he identifies as gay, non-binary, bisexual, or anything else, but what I do know is that he’s been labeled public enemy number one. The truth is, being jailed simply for being themselves scares me. It’s a chilling reminder that society can turn on anyone who doesn’t fit its narrow definition of “normal.”
He could be hiding, in jail, or fortunate enough to have left the country. For his sake, I hope he’s no longer in Ethiopia. I feel deep sympathy for him, forced to leave his home in a place that punishes anyone who dares to be different. I hope you’re safe wherever you are. I hope you’re okay. I hope you find a supportive community that has your back, because this country seems determined to make life difficult for those who don’t fit in.
Your struggle connects with all of us, reminding us that we must stand together against hate and discrimination. Stay strong, and know that you are not alone in this fight.
