Pride: My sister’s confidence

My sister has a group of several male friends who meet regularly. One of them is more religious than the others and often comments on how it’s wrong for her to have so many male friends. Recently, he told her that she must be a lesbian if she spends so much time with men and should make more female friends. She laughed and pointed out that being a lesbian has nothing to do with having male friends. None of her male friends have seen her with any men she’s dated, which makes her think some of them might share his assumption about her sexuality. A couple of her friends overheard the conversation and told him to mind his own business. She didn’t correct him or them about her being straight; she simply felt no need to defend herself. After all, there’s nothing wrong with being a lesbian. If they want to assume she is, that’s fine by her. I’m so proud to have a sister who is confident in who she is, unbothered by their assumptions. I hope more sisters and brothers feel this way. This is her gift to me for Pride Month.
